The Law Commission aims, via its recommendations, to improve the law basically, and at the least, to keep it simple and modern.
It comes under the umbrella of the Government Legal Department (GLD), although it is a 'Non-Departmental Public Body'.
It is a statutory independent body created by the Law Commissions Act 1965 to keep the law under review and to recommend reform where it is needed.
The Commission is under the stewardship of 5 full-time Commissioners, supported by GLD personnel and Parliamentary Counsel. The structure is divided into teams: Public Law Team, Commercial and Common Law Team, Criminal Law and Evidence Team, and the Property, Family and Trust Law etc.
Solicitors and barristers are recruited as necessary on a project by project basis. Posts can, therefore, be permanent, fixed-term, or secondment. The Commission offers family-friendly hours and a civil service pension.
Recruitment is done via the Government Legal Department Recruitment Team. See under 'Government Legal Department' for details.
