Career Change Story
I went from being a PSL to Corporate Finance Editor and Series Editor for legal publishers, Practical Law Company. Funnily enough, I had applied to Practical Law Company twice, and the second time they hired me! Perservence paid off. Perhaps it was also that the second time, which was several years later, I had more to offer and by then PLC was a larger organisation so, I'm guessing, had more scope for taking people on. I think both times I responded to adverts placed by PLC in their own magazine. It's worth noting that I ended up doing a different (and better) job than the one advertised: they created a new role, of Corporate Finance Editor, that used my area of expertise. After a few years I took on another role as well and split my time between them.
Career Change Reflections
I really liked my new job in legal journalism. I liked the more relaxed atmosphere, the camaraderie, the sense of achievement when pieces were published, the feeling of doing a job well, the pleasure of learning the craft of the journalist, the rush of adrenaline but also the knowledge that you would be able to go home at the end of the day! Tips? Every job is bound to be different so it is difficult to generalise. Will suit someone who enjoys writing and learning new writing techniques and has quite an outgoing personality. Pay not as good as private practice, of course, but quality of life was higher.
